The quest of most custom builders is to achieve silence AND performance. Options such as watercooling are a great step towards achieving this goal, but don't forget about the power supply, either. Many PSUs can generate a lot of noise, which may counter some of the painstaking work you've just done making the rest of your rig quiet (I spent many months learning this when I had my Antec SmartPower 400w).
Today we're going to take a look at a PSU offering from SilenX, the iXtrema 400w. It boasts an impressive sound rating of less than 14dba, quieter than pretty much any case fan or CPU cooler you can buy, and certainly not audible. We'll be testing the Xtrema 400w not only on its sound level, but on its performance as a PSU, and we'll see how it stacks up to our Thermaltake 480w and Seasonic 400w testing units. Read on...
