Steelpad S&S Review
Written by Justin B. | Date: 9.23.2004 | Manufacturer: Steelpad
We'll be testing with the Logitech MX510 with Padsurfers installed.

Desktop Usage
Desktop usage consists of basic mousing tasks done over a period of about a week, as well as image tracing done in Photoshop. I wasn't used to the rough surface at first, but unlike the 4D, this rough surface is slick at the same time. It's hard to say which pad provides more grip (i.e. best for accuracy)-- I felt the Icemat had slightly more controlled motions (i.e. when trying to trace around an image in Photoshop) but in reality both pads are so close, it's so tough to call a real winner in this arena.

Movement on the S&S definitely is not as effortless as it is on the Icemat 2, and definitely requires more effort than the 4S. However, the mouse glides exceptionally well for a "rough-surface" mousepad, so it's fine for mousing. In Windows, I felt that the S&S was just easier on the hand than the Icemat-- it's hard to explain just what I mean, but it's just a softer, more relaxed movement. The Icemat allows you to stop fast, start fast, and move fast-- maybe good for gaming, but I prefer the S&S for Windows.

Gaming Usage
Gaming usage, the general fragfest games like UT2K4 and Halo were used. I feel the Icemat definitely holds its edge in gaming-- sorry, but a rough-surface mousepad just isn't going to do as good in my book with effortless gliding, and given the more responsive rather than relaxed and pleasant feel of the S&S, I'm going to have to give the crown to the Icemat on this one.
