Thermaltake PurePower 680w PSU Review
Written by Dan Groff | Date: 2.20.2005 | Manufacturer: Thermaltake
Thermaltake makers of some of the finest computer components on the market today have introduced another great product, the Thermaltake 680 watt monster power supply. But can this power supply hang with some of the best power supplies on the market? It supports every option on the market today like the new ATX 2.0 spec. and even has PCI-E power connectors. FastlaneHW plans to put this power supply to the test and see if indeed it can be put into the elite class.

After unpacking this monster power supply you are greeted with an owners manual, 24 pin to 20 pin converter, 4 pin Molex to 6 pin converter and the PSU of course. After getting the bubble wrap off the PSU it was time to check this bad boy out.

I set the power supply on its side and placed the converter in front of it to snap this picture. What I did not do is turn the flash on just to show you how shinny the finish really was on the PSU. The second picture again was taken with no flash on and the top and bottom shows the white plastic back drop I use for taking pictured being reflected. It is the prettiest finished PSU I have ever used or even seen.

The first picture is a good close up view of the back of the unit and the second picture is of the front. Not to sound like a broken record but notice the mirror finish. What is missing from the back of the PSU is a fan speed control knob. With two 80 mm fans one in the front and one in the rear it would be nice to control their speed and noise level.

Now the mirror finish is nice but check out the cable wrap on every single power supply cable. Most PSU's have the main power cable wrapped but Thermaltake like most things they do took it to the next level. Under black light the cables really seem to absorb the light and seem to glow, they are not UV reactive though.

By looking at the pictures above you can see the workmanship and time that Thermaltake took into wrapping the cables. Each cable is shrink wrapped at booth ends of the sheathing to make sure it stays in place.
