Everglide g-1000 Gaming Mouse and Titan Monster Mat Review

Introduction

Can using a gaming mouse and pad give you the edge?


I like to game, but no more than the next guy. I typically use Kensington Expert Mouse trackball devices instead of the usual two-button mouse, due to a right-hand wrist injury from the 1980's. Maybe you don't think I'm qualified to pass judgment on the more typical optical mouse? Maybe you're right. I have reviewed some fancy mouse pads recently (look for the Corepad review we did a short while back). Maybe I can swing some test support. How do you do that? Why you throw a LAN party. Works like a charm. So in this review, we are going to take a close look at a mouse / mousepad combination from one company - Everglide. We have the Everglide g-1000 Professional Gaming Mouse and the Everglide Titan Monster Mat - Fnatic Edition, as shown in figure 1. Extensive testing will reveal how well these babies play together.

The package from Everglide arrived safely, in spite of the typical UPS abuse to packages that has me wondering how they stay in business. Anyway, FastLaneHW received a few items from Everglide at the same time (figure 2), so we are doing two separate reviews. This review is focused specifically on two items - the Everglide g-1000 Professional Gaming Mouse (about $30) and the Everglide Titan Monster Mat - Fnatic Edition (about $22), both provided by Hank at Performance PCs. The other review (released previously) was focused on the Everglide s-500 Professional Gaming Headphones.

You can see in figure 3 how these items are packaged. The Everglide g-1000 Professional Gaming Mouse has the typical plastic clamshell packaging, and you can read the mouse specifications easily. The Everglide Titan Monster Mat - Fnatic Edition was wrapped in plastic, but then also stuffed into a golden can. The can had a few small dings in it, but it's only packaging for the pad. Kind of cool actually. You'll ding this up anyway if you use it to transport the pad to a LAN party. Maybe I can use that can in one of my modding projects.....

Figure 4 above shows you how a normal person would open the Everglide g-1000 Professional Gaming Mouse packaging. It comes with instructions too, but it's mostly marketing stuff. They don't tell you how to use the buttons for adjusting the resolution. We'll have to figure that out for ourselves. Once out of the package (figure 5) we can see that there is a standard USB connector. Everglide didn't provide a PS/2 adapter, so if you don't have an available USB port on your computer, now is the time to consider a USB hub. Get the USB 2.0 (high-speed) hub if you are buying one, even though this mouse probably doesn't need anything faster than the USB 1.0 speed. Your other devices will hate you for buying a slow speed USB hub.

The Everglide Titan Monster Mat - Fnatic Edition in figure 6 looks pretty fancy, doesn't it? I hope nobody spills anything on this pad during our test phase. As you can see in figure 7, there are some instructions included with the pad, and they mostly pertain to keeping it clean. My experience with the Corepad cloth pads found that you must strive to keep them clean too. Don't eat (or toss) your cookies over these pads! In figure 8, we see how flexible the Everglide Titan Monster Mat - Fnatic Edition can be. It only took a short while for it to lay flat after being pulled out of the copper-looking can that it was packaged in. By the way, the Everglide Titan Monster Mat - Fnatic Edition measures 444mm wide by 355mm deep by 4.3mm thick.
